이번 주말에 친구 생일 파티가 있어서 퇴근 후에 선물을 사러 갔어요.
가게에는 예쁜 머그컵과 작은 향초가 많아서 한참 구경했어요.
머그컵은 실용적이지만 조금 평범해 보이고 향초는 분위기가 좋아서 친구가 좋아할 것 같아요.

저는 두 가지를 비교해 보고 향초를 사기로 했어요.
계산하기 전에 생일 카드도 하나 골랐어요. 카드에 짧은 메시지를 쓰고 싶어요.
비싼 선물은 아니지만 친구에게 좋은 선물이 되면 좋겠어요.

1. 이번 주말에 친구 생일 파티가 있어서 퇴근 후에 선물을 사러 갔어요.

이번 주말에 = this weekend
친구 생일 파티가 있어서 = because my friend's birthday party is this weekend
퇴근 후에 = after work
선물을 사러 갔어요 = went to buy a gift
This sentence means: My friend's birthday party is this weekend, so I went to buy a gift after work.

-아/어서 can show a reason. -(으)러 가다 means “to go in order to do something.”

2. 가게에는 예쁜 머그컵과 작은 향초가 많아서 한참 구경했어요.

가게에는 = in the store / as for the store
예쁜 머그컵과 작은 향초가 많아서 = because there were many pretty mugs and small scented candles
한참 구경했어요 = looked around for a while
This sentence means: There were many pretty mugs and small scented candles in the store, so I looked around for a while.

한참 means “for quite a while.” 구경하다 means to look around or browse.

3. 머그컵은 실용적이지만 조금 평범해 보이고 향초는 분위기가 좋아서 친구가 좋아할 것 같아요.

조금 평범해 보이고 = looks a little ordinary, and

-지만 means “but.” -아/어 보이다 means “to look” or “to seem.” -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 means “I think...” or “it seems like...”

4. 저는 두 가지를 비교해 보고 향초를 사기로 했어요.

두 가지를 = two options / two things
비교해 보고 = compared and tried looking
향초를 사기로 했어요 = decided to buy the scented candle
This sentence means: I compared the two options and decided to buy the scented candle.

-아/어 보다 means “to try doing something.” -기로 하다 means “to decide to do something.”

5. 계산하기 전에 생일 카드도 하나 골랐어요.

계산하기 전에 = before paying
생일 카드도 = a birthday card too
하나 골랐어요 = chose one
This sentence means: Before paying, I also chose one birthday card.

-기 전에 means “before doing something.” means “also” or “too.”

6. 카드에 짧은 메시지를 쓰고 싶어요.

카드에 = on the card
짧은 메시지를 = a short message / object
쓰고 싶어요 = want to write
This sentence means: I want to write a short message on the card.

-고 싶어요 is used to say “I want to do something.”

7. 비싼 선물은 아니지만 친구에게 좋은 선물이 되면 좋겠어요.

비싼 선물은 아니지만 = it is not an expensive gift, but
친구에게 = for my friend / to my friend
좋은 선물이 되면 좋겠어요 = I hope it becomes a good gift
This sentence means: It is not an expensive gift, but I hope it will be a good gift for my friend.

-지만 means “but.” -(으)면 좋겠어요 is used to express a hope or wish.

English Translation

This weekend, my friend has a birthday party, so after work I went to buy a gift.
There were many pretty mugs and small scented candles in the store, so I looked around for a while.
The mug is practical, but it looks a little ordinary, and the scented candle has a nice vibe, so I think my friend will like it.

I compared the two options and decided to buy the scented candle.
