하고 - Connecting Nouns and Expressing “With”
하고 is a Korean particle used to connect nouns or show who someone does an action with.
Depending on the sentence, it can mean “and” or “with.”
- 사과하고 바나나를 사요.
I buy apples and bananas. - 친구하고 영화를 봐요.
I watch a movie with a friend. - 언니하고 동생이 집에 있어요.
My older sister and younger sibling are at home.
하고 attaches directly to a noun. Its form does not change according to the noun’s final vowel or consonant.
Basic Form
The basic form is:
Noun + 하고
- 친구 + 하고 → 친구하고
- 책 + 하고 → 책하고
- 선생님 + 하고 → 선생님하고
- 가족 + 하고 → 가족하고
Unlike some Korean particles, 하고 has only one form.
- 사과하고 ✓
- 책하고 ✓
- 학생하고 ✓
- 서울하고 ✓
Connecting Two Nouns: “And”
Use 하고 between two nouns to connect them.
The structure is:
Noun 1 + 하고 + Noun 2
- 커피하고 차
coffee and tea - 한국하고 일본
Korea and Japan - 형하고 누나
an older brother and an older sister - 책하고 공책
a book and a notebook
The connected nouns can be used together inside a complete sentence.
- 저는 커피하고 차를 좋아해요.
I like coffee and tea. - 사과하고 바나나를 사요.
I buy apples and bananas. - 책하고 공책이 책상 위에 있어요.
A book and a notebook are on the desk. - 민수 씨하고 수진 씨가 학교에 가요.
Minsu and Sujin go to school.
The particle that shows the role of the connected nouns usually appears after the final noun.
- 사과하고 바나나를 사요.
I buy apples and bananas.
Here, 를 follows 바나나 and marks 사과하고 바나나 as the objects of 사요.
- 민수 씨하고 수진 씨가 와요.
Minsu and Sujin are coming.
Here, 가 follows 수진 씨 and marks both people as the subjects of 와요.
Connecting Three or More Nouns

I buy apples, bananas, and strawberries. - 책하고 공책하고 연필이 있어요.
There are books, notebooks, and pencils. - 한국어하고 영어하고 러시아어를 공부해요.
I study Korean, English, and Russian.
In everyday conversation, the final 하고 may sometimes be omitted before the last noun, but repeating 하고 is clear and easy for beginners.
Expressing “With”
Use Noun + 하고 before a verb to show who someone does an action with.
The structure is:
Person or animal + 하고 + Verb

I eat dinner with my family. - 선생님하고 한국어를 공부해요.
I study Korean with my teacher. - 동생하고 영화를 봐요.
I watch a movie with my younger sibling. - 강아지하고 산책해요.
I take a walk with my dog.
In these sentences, the noun before 하고 is the companion involved in the action.
Using 하고 같이
같이 means “together.”
It is common to use 같이 after Noun + 하고 to make the meaning of “with” especially clear.
- 친구하고 같이 공부해요.
I study together with a friend. - 가족하고 같이 여행해요.
I travel with my family. - 동생하고 같이 살아요.
I live with my younger sibling. - 선생님하고 같이 연습해요.

Both sentences are natural.
