-지 않아요 - Standard Negation
-지 않아요 is used to make negative sentences in Korean.
It attaches to a verb or adjective stem and usually means “do not,” “does not,” “am not,” “is not,” or “are not.”
- 저는 커피를 마시지 않아요.
I do not drink coffee. - 오늘은 춥지 않아요.
It is not cold today. - 민수 씨는 학교에 가지 않아요.
Minsu does not go to school.
-지 않아요 has a similar meaning to 안, but it follows a different sentence structure.
Basic Sentence Structure
The basic structure is:
Verb or adjective stem + -지 않아요
First, remove -다 from the dictionary form.
Then add -지 않아요.
- 먹다 → 먹 + 지 않아요 → 먹지 않아요
do not eat - 가다 → 가 + 지 않아요 → 가지 않아요
do not go - 좋다 → 좋 + 지 않아요 → 좋지 않아요
is not good - 비싸다 → 비싸 + 지 않아요 → 비싸지 않아요

The form does not depend on the final vowel or final consonant of the stem.
Negating Action Verbs
Use -지 않아요 with action verbs to say that someone does not perform an action.
- 저는 아침을 먹지 않아요.
I do not eat breakfast. - 친구가 오늘 학교에 가지 않아요.
My friend is not going to school today. - 저는 커피를 마시지 않아요.
I do not drink coffee. - 민수 씨는 텔레비전을 보지 않아요.
Minsu does not watch television. - 주말에는 일하지 않아요.

The subject, object, location, and time expressions remain in their usual positions.
- 저는 한국어를 공부하지 않아요.
Literal: As for me, Korean study do not.
Natural: I do not study Korean.
Negating Adjectives
-지 않아요 can also be used with Korean adjectives.
- 오늘은 춥지 않아요.
It is not cold today. - 이 가방은 비싸지 않아요.
This bag is not expensive. - 음식이 맵지 않아요.
The food is not spicy. - 제 방은 크지 않아요.
My room is not big. - 한국어가 어렵지 않아요.
Korean is not difficult.
Korean adjectives conjugate like verbs, so the same negative structure is used.
Using -지 않아요 with 하다 Verbs
Verbs ending in 하다 change to 하지 않아요.
- 공부하다 → 공부하지 않아요
do not study - 운동하다 → 운동하지 않아요
do not exercise - 일하다 → 일하지 않아요
do not work - 요리하다 → 요리하지 않아요
do not cook - 좋아하다 → 좋아하지 않아요

Unlike the short negative form with 안, the noun and 하다 remain together.

Present, Past, and Future Forms
The tense is expressed through 않다.
Present tense
- 먹지 않아요.
I do not eat. - 가지 않아요.
I do not go. - 춥지 않아요.
It is not cold.
Past tense
- 먹지 않았어요.
I did not eat. - 가지 않았어요.
I did not go. - 춥지 않았어요.
It was not cold.
Future tense
- 먹지 않을 거예요.
I will not eat. - 가지 않을 거예요.
I will not go. - 춥지 않을 거예요.
It will not be cold.
The verb or adjective stem before -지 does not change.

안 and -지 않아요
Both 안 and -지 않아요 express negation.
Short negation with 안

Long negation with -지 않아요
- 저는 커피를 마시지 않아요.

Negative Questions Used for Suggestions
Some negative questions can be used as gentle suggestions.
- 같이 가지 않아요?
Would you like to go together? - 커피를 마시지 않아요?
Would you like to have coffee? - 주말에 만나지 않아요?
Shall we meet on the weekend?
The meaning depends on the context and tone of voice.
