지난달부터 새로운 취미를 찾고 싶었어요.
그래서 주말에 작은 요리 수업을 신청했어요.
처음에는 혼자 가는 것이 조금 어색했지만, 선생님이 친절해서 금방 편해졌어요.

수업에서는 김치볶음밥을 만들었어요.
재료를 자르고 양념을 넣는 과정이 생각보다 재미있었어요.
중간에 조금 실수했지만, 옆 사람에게 물어보고 다시 해 볼 수 있었어요.
요리가 끝난 후에는 모두 같이 음식을 먹었어요.
맛도 괜찮고 분위기도 좋아서 다음 수업도 들어 보기로 했어요.

새로운 취미를 = a new hobby / object
찾고 싶었어요 = wanted to find
This sentence means: Since last month, I wanted to find a new hobby.

-고 싶어요 means “want to do something.” In the past tense, it becomes -고 싶었어요.

2. 그래서 주말에 작은 요리 수업을 신청했어요.

그래서 = so, therefore
주말에 = on the weekend
작은 요리 수업을 = a small cooking class / object
신청했어요 = signed up for
This sentence means: So I signed up for a small cooking class on the weekend.

그래서 connects a reason and a result.

3. 처음에는 혼자 가는 것이 조금 어색했지만, 선생님이 친절해서 금방 편해졌어요.

처음에는 = at first
혼자 가는 것이 = going alone
조금 어색했지만 = was a little awkward, but
선생님이 친절해서 = because the instructor was kind
금방 편해졌어요 = I quickly became comfortable
This sentence means: At first, going alone felt a little awkward, but because the instructor was kind, I quickly became comfortable.

-는 것 can turn an action into a noun idea. -아/어서 can show a reason. -아/어지다 can show a change of state.

4. 재료를 자르고 양념을 넣는 과정이 생각보다 재미있었어요.

재료를 자르고 = cut the ingredients and
양념을 넣는 과정이 = the process of adding seasoning / subject
생각보다 재미있었어요 = was more fun than expected
This sentence means: The process of cutting ingredients and adding seasoning was more fun than expected.

-고 connects actions. 생각보다 means “more than expected.”

5. 중간에 조금 실수했지만, 옆 사람에게 물어보고 다시 해 볼 수 있었어요.

중간에 조금 실수했지만 = I made a small mistake in the middle, but
옆 사람에게 물어보고 = asked the person next to me and
다시 해 볼 수 있었어요 = was able to try again
This sentence means: I made a small mistake in the middle, but I asked the person next to me and was able to try again.

-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 means “can” or “be able to.” -아/어 보다 means “to try doing something.”

6. 요리가 끝난 후에는 모두 같이 음식을 먹었어요.

요리가 끝난 후에는 = after the cooking was finished
모두 같이 = everyone together
음식을 먹었어요 = ate the food
This sentence means: After the cooking was finished, everyone ate the food together.

-(으)ㄴ 후에 means “after doing something” or “after something happens.”

7. 맛도 괜찮고 분위기도 좋아서 다음 수업도 들어 보기로 했어요.

맛도 괜찮고 = the taste was also good
분위기도 좋아서 = because the atmosphere was also nice
다음 수업도 들어 보기로 했어요 = decided to try taking the next class too
This sentence means: The taste was good and the atmosphere was nice, so I decided to try taking the next class too.

-기로 하다 means “to decide to do something.” means “also” or “too.”

English Translation

Since last month, I wanted to find a new hobby.
So I signed up for a small cooking class on the weekend.
At first, going alone felt a little awkward, but because the instructor was kind, I quickly became comfortable.

In the class, we made kimchi fried rice.
The process of cutting ingredients and adding seasoning was more fun than expected.
I made a small mistake in the middle, but I asked the person next to me and was able to try again.
