Korean Honorific Irregular Verbs: 듣다, 알다, and More

korean grammar Jul 01, 2026

You've learned -(으)시- - the honorific verb marker that shows respect for the subject of a sentence. And you've learned irregular verbs like ㅂ, ㅡ, and 르 irregulars.

Now these two worlds collide.

Some of the most commonly used verbs in Korean are irregular - and when you add -(으)시- to them, the irregularity plays out first, then the honorific ending attaches. If you don't know this, the results can look completely unexpected.

This post focuses on two key irregular types that come up constantly in honorific speech: ㄷ irregular (듣다 type) and ㄹ irregular (알다 type).

Quick Review: How -(으)시- Works

Before diving in, a quick recap:

  • Vowel stem + → 가다 → 가세요
  • Consonant stem + 으시 → 먹다 → 먹으세요
  • ㄹ stem + (ㄹ drops) → 살다 → 사세요

The irregular verbs below follow their own stem-changing rules before the honorific ending attaches.

1. ㄷ Irregular - 듣다 Type

The Rule

Verbs ending in are irregular when followed by a vowel. The ㄷ changes to :

듣다 → 듣 + 으시 = 들으시 → 들으세요

Step What happens
Stem: 듣 ends in ㄷ (consonant)
Add 으시 (vowel) ㄷ → ㄹ: 들으시
Add ending 들으시 + 어요 = 들으세요

Common ㄷ Irregular Verbs + Honorific Forms

Dictionary form Meaning Present honorific Past honorific
듣다 listen / hear 들으세요 들으셨어요
걷다 walk 걸으세요 걸으셨어요
묻다 ask / bury 물으세요 물으셨어요

⚠️ Regular ㄷ verbs exist too - not all ㄷ-ending verbs are irregular: 받다 (receive) → 받으세요 ✅ (regular — ㄷ stays) 닫다 (close) → 닫으세요 ✅ (regular)

듣다 - The Most Important ㄷ Irregular

듣다 (to listen/hear) is one of the most commonly used verbs in honorific contexts. Here it is across all tenses:

Tense Honorific form Natural
Present 들으세요 (You) listen / Are you listening?
Past 들으셨어요 (You/they) heard / listened
Future 들으실 거예요 (You/they) will hear
Formal present 들으십니다 (Subject) listens (formal)
Request 들어 주세요 Please listen

듣다 in real sentences:

선생님, 잘 들으세요? Teacher, can you hear well?

음악을 자주 들으세요? Do you often listen to music?

할머니가 귀가 잘 안 들으세요. Grandmother can't hear well.

제 말씀 들으셨어요? Did you hear what I said?

천천히 말씀해 주세요. 잘 못 들었어요. Please speak slowly. I couldn't hear well.

2. ㄹ Irregular - 알다 Type

The Rule

Verbs ending in drop the ㄹ when followed by ㄴ, ㅂ, 시, or 오/아. This affects honorific conjugation because -(으)시- starts with 시.

알다 → 알 + = ~~ㄹ~~ + 시 → 아 → 아세요

Step What happens
Stem: 알 ends in ㄹ
Add 시 (not 으시 — ㄹ stems take 시 directly) ㄹ drops: 알 → 아
Add ending 아시 + 어요 = 아세요

Common ㄹ Irregular Verbs + Honorific Forms

Dictionary form Meaning Present honorific Past honorific
알다 know 아세요 아셨어요
모르다* not know 모르세요 모르셨어요
살다 live 사세요 사셨어요
만들다 make 만드세요 만드셨어요
열다 open 여세요 여셨어요
팔다 sell 파세요 파셨어요
울다 cry 우세요 우셨어요
놀다 play/hang out 노세요 노셨어요

* 모르다 is 르 irregular, not ㄹ irregular - but its honorific form follows the same ㄹ-drop pattern via the 르 rule.

알다 - The Most Important ㄹ Irregular

알다 (to know) is one of the most frequent verbs in Korean - and its honorific form 아세요 looks nothing like the original verb at first glance.

Tense Honorific form Natural
Present 아세요 (You) know / Do you know?
Past 아셨어요 (You/they) knew
Future 아실 거예요 (You/they) will know
Formal present 아십니다 (Subject) knows
Formal question 아십니까? Do you know?

알다 in real sentences:

선생님, 이거 아세요? Teacher, do you know this?

이 길 아세요? Do you know this road?

할머니, 아셨어요? 제가 결혼해요! Grandmother, did you know? I'm getting married!

사장님이 그 문제를 아실 거예요. The CEO will probably know about that issue.

이미 아세요? Do you already know?

Side-by-Side: Regular vs Irregular Honorific Forms

This comparison makes it clear why these verbs can be confusing:

Verb Regular honorific? Honorific form Why it looks different
먹다 ✅ regular 으세요 consonant stem → 으시
가다 ✅ regular 세요 vowel stem → 시
듣다 ❌ ㄷ irregular 으세요 ㄷ→ㄹ before vowel
걷다 ❌ ㄷ irregular 으세요 ㄷ→ㄹ before vowel
알다 ❌ ㄹ irregular 세요 ㄹ drops before 시
살다 ❌ ㄹ irregular 세요 ㄹ drops before 시
만들다 ❌ ㄹ irregular 만드세요 ㄹ drops before 시
