How to Say "I'm Doing" in Korean: ~고 있어요
Sep 04, 2026In English, there's a clear difference between:

Two Meanings of ~고 있어요
~고 있어요 covers two related but slightly different meanings:
1. Right now - happening at this moment
지금 뭐 해요? — 밥 먹고 있어요. What are you doing now? — I'm eating.
잠깐만요, 전화하고 있어요. One moment, I'm on the phone.
2. Ongoing - happening over a period of time
요즘 한국어를 배우고 있어요. I'm learning Korean these days.
서울에서 살고 있어요. I'm living in Seoul.
The second use is especially important - it describes situations that are in progress over days, weeks, or months, not just the current second.

| Pattern | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Plain verb | Habit, general fact, schedule | 아침에 커피를 마셔요. (I drink coffee in the morning.) |
| ~고 있어요 | Right now / ongoing process | 지금 커피를 마시고 있어요. (I'm drinking coffee right now.) |
More comparisons:
| Plain | ~고 있어요 |
|---|---|
| 한국어를 공부해요. (I study Korean.) | 한국어를 공부하고 있어요. (I'm studying Korean — currently/ongoing.) |
| 서울에 살아요. (I live in Seoul.) | 서울에 살고 있어요. (I'm living in Seoul — currently.) |
| 책을 읽어요. (I read books.) | 책을 읽고 있어요. (I'm reading a book — right now.) |
💡 For locations and ongoing life situations (살다, 다니다, 배우다), both forms are common and natural. The ~고 있어요 form emphasizes the current, temporary nature of the situation.
